INTERA Incorporated is seeking a motivated and proactive Mine Reclamation Specialist to join our Mining and Environmental line of business in our Albuquerque, New Mexico, office. This role leads impactful reclamation and mine closure projects for public agencies and mining clients committed to environmental stewardship and technical excellence. This leadership role is ideal for a seasoned professional passionate about shaping the future of mine closure services through geomorphic landform design, sustainable site reuse planning, and inclusive stakeholder engagement. Beyond technical leadership, this role serves as a key contributor to INTERA’s mining business development efforts. Responsibilities include participating in strategic planning and guiding the growth and direction of closure capabilities through development of the technical team, expansion of service offerings, strengthening brand presence and industry networks within the mine closure market, and leading proposal development and project acquisition to support continued growth and long-term success.

Responsibilities:
- Manage project execution, including scope, budget, and schedule management, and lead multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors to deliver high-quality work in accordance with established plans and specifications
- Support collaborative development of policies and procedures for mine reclamation funding and a programmatic structure for cleanup evaluation and execution
- Develop conceptual site models to inform key decisions
- Lead site assessments and investigations supporting reclamation plan development, including mine waste characterization, radiological surveys, geophysical evaluation of mine workings, geotechnical and monitoring well drilling, and soil and groundwater sampling.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop reclamation and future use plans that reflect cultural values and ecological sustainability
- Develop and update mine reclamation/closure plans and associated cost estimates to ensure alignment with environmental and closure standards
- Prepare technical reports and presentations for clients, regulators, and other interested parties
- Communicate effectively with clients, regulators, public stakeholders, and industry groups regarding complex environmental remediation projects
- Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and promote a respectful work environment
- Provide mentorship and growth opportunities to junior scientists and engineers
Business Development Responsibilities
- Drive the expansion of INTERA’s presence in the mine closure market through execution and refinement of the closure services growth strategy
- Represent INTERA at conferences and professional organizations to strengthen brand recognition and cultivate new strategic client relationships
- Lead capture efforts, including proposal development, client outreach, and opportunity identification to secure new closure and reclamation projects
- Build and develop a high-performing technical team that enhances INTERA’s competitive capabilities and supports long-term growth
- Lead the integration of geomorphic landform design principles into INTERA’s closure services offering to create sustainable and resilient post-mining landscapes
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, geology, or related field
- 15+ years of applicable work experience, preferably with consulting or mining industry practices
- Design or planning experience for safeguarding mine features, reclamation and revegetation, and contaminant cleanup
- Demonstrated ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with diverse communities and strong cultural awareness
- Experience preparing and contributing to proposals and client presentations for mine closure projects
- Demonstrated success in securing consulting projects or expanding client relationships in the mining sector
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance, best practices, and industry standards for mine reclamation, including environmental protection, cultural resource preservation, and the integration of public comments into permit development and design
- Strong understanding of conceptual site models, contaminant fate and transport concepts, human health and ecological risk, and models to predict contaminant migration, remediation system performance, and receptor risk
- Willingness to travel to project sites, other INTERA offices, and globally for industry events
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or eligibility
- Master’s degree in engineering, environmental science, geology, or related field
- Foundational knowledge of physical hydrogeology
- Experience with AutoCAD/Civil3D
- Experience with Engineering Evaluation and Cost Analysis
- Experience with Survey123 and ArcGIS online web maps and dashboards
- Design or planning experience for onsite disposal cells
- Experience with tailing storage facilities (TSF), including performance assessments, cover system design, drainage design, water balance, or remediation
- Working knowledge of radiological health/health physics/TENORM
- Experience with tribal consultation processes and integrating traditional knowledge into closure planning
- Working knowledge of NRC and EPA regulatory processes (NUREG guidance, CERCLA, RCRA, MARSSIM, etc.)
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training certification
- Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training
