Mid-Level Civil or Geotechnical Engineer, Albuquerque, NM 2018-23-ABQ02

INTERA Incorporated is eagerly seeking a Civil or Geotechnical Engineer for our Albuquerque, New Mexico, office to help deliver world-class solutions to our mining clients. We’re looking for an experienced professional engineer who is excited to join a strong, diverse team of other talented environmental professionals. Here at INTERA, we never shy away from complex problems and design solutions so there is a wide scope of challenges available for the successful candidate, such as planning and implementing field programs, and designing cap systems and earthen retention structures. We value self-sufficiency, a commitment to excellence, and someone who understands the importance of leveraging support from both senior and junior staff.

For some, there’s an appeal to working at a large firm and being one of a dozen similarly skilled engineers working on small pieces of the same project. We are looking for someone who wants the exact opposite. We’re interested in a candidate who can work within teams of 3-5 people to take things from concept to construction. Our growing group of reputable engineering talent offers both senior and junior level expertise so there is never a lack of support, but always enough breadth to directly impact each product.

Job Description

The principal focus of the position will be designing solutions for mine waste and tailings management, as well as site closure and reclamation for domestic and international mining clients. The responsibilities of this role will primarily include:

  • Developing and implementing work plans for data collection
  • Creating design drawings and construction specifications
  • Leading and interpreting civil/geotechnical investigations
  • Analyzing and modeling slope stability and unsaturated flow

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering
  • 10+ years of applied, relevant experience that includes designing in AutoCAD
  • Demonstrated, past experience with mine waste/tailings management, design and/or mine closure and reclamation designs
  • Active Professional Engineering registration (civil), with licensure in New Mexico, or the ability to become licensed in New Mexico and other states as required
  • Skills and experience in both technical evaluation and report preparation, as well as design experience and development of contract documents (technical plans, specifications, and contract language)
  • Fantastic people skills and the ability to deliver captivating presentations
  • The ability to travel to project sites or meetings
  • Able to work seamlessly in both teams and independently

Desired Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Experience, training, and/or certification in Hydrogeology and/or Geology
  • A master’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering
  • Field experience in drilling oversight and sample collection, and construction oversight and administration

Strong design experience and proven project leadership skills outweigh modeling expertise. Additionally, we value good writers since the bulk of our work is written. We also value people who are independent thinkers, who can clearly communicate their opinions, and constructively test and debate ideas. Our best results come from many eyes looking at the same problem because we see each problem as fuel for improvement.

Required Information to Include in Cover Letter and Resume

Please submit your resume and a one-page cover letter that summarizes two significant accomplishments; one featuring a team project, and the other featuring an individual accomplishment. Each summary should be a paragraph or two long—the more descriptive the better (no bullets).

Please combine your cover letter and resume into one document. If you’re selected for an interview, be prepared to give a 20-minute presentation on your work.

About INTERA

INTERA is a geoscience and engineering consulting firm on a mission to help our clients manage environmental project risks. We’re an established, international consulting firm based in Austin, Texas, with 15 offices across the United States and Europe. We have almost 45 years of solving some of the most challenging and interesting mining, water resources, environmental, coastal and waste management issues faced by private industry and government agencies. Our roots are in modeling and hydrogeological characterization where we got our start in the 1970s working for the United States Geological Survey and Sandia National Laboratories to develop the first 3-D coupled groundwater flow and transport code for evaluating deep-well disposal of hazardous wastes. Today, we’re still developing numerical models and other quantitative decision-support tools. We also maintain an active presence on the ground, completing the fundamental fieldwork that most projects require.

Our employees say that what they value most at INTERA is our corporate culture—because not only do we believe that our people are our most important asset, we embody it. As an employee-owned company, we are invested in providing a good work-life balance, cross-office connection and culture, and generous benefits packages.
